Crowded Skies over Macedonia

Skopje “Alexander the Great” Airport recorded another strong month in August as its passenger numbers continued to grow by double digits. Macedonia’s largest airport welcomed 143.424 passengers, representing an increase of 25.4% compared to the same month last year. It marks the airport’s seventh consecutive month of passenger growth. Skopje is now on course to handle over one million passengers this year and break its all-time record set in 2000. So far in 2014, the airport has welcomed 810.701 travelers, up 20.9% on the previous year. Meanwhile, the country’s second international airport, Ohrid, welcomed 15.729 passengers this August. Overall, Ohrid Airport, which has no scheduled year-round flights, welcomed 51.422 travelers during the first eight months of the year.
According to Eurocontrol, Macedonia has also recorded a significant increase in the number of commercial aircraft entering its airspace this year, recording the largest growth in Europe, ahead of Bulgaria and Turkey. During the first eight months this year, a total of 99.231 aircraft passed through Macedonia’s airspace, an increase of 30.4% compared to the same period last year. Of those, 90.158 were flying over Macedonia and 9.073 were departing or arriving either at Skopje or Ohrid airports. The growth comes as a result of increased traffic at Macedonia’s international airports as well as the recent reopening of Kosovo’s airspace for commercial air traffic after fifteen years.

New campaigns

Our airport had a busy month again, when it comes to the marketing aspect. We have had several activities and started new campaigns. The latest brands which appeared for the first time with campaigns on Skopje Airport were Austrian Airlines and BFC (Business Friendly Certificate). Austrian Airlines positioned itself on some very attractive positions and branded the airport main entrance doors. BFC (Business Friendly Certificate) positioned their brand in the arriving area .
